1. Cleaner Air Know-How: Filter Upgrades
  • Is it Time for a Filter Upgrade?

    September 24, 2019

Things to consider before purchasing your next air filter.

    • When it’s time to replace the filter in your heating and cooling system, there’s more to consider than just the size. (And, yes, size is extremely important). Other factors, such as the MPR rating and your lifestyle needs, will help determine if you need a better filter. Here, questions to ask yourself if you’re ready for an upgrade.

What particles can my filter capture?

The number and type of particles your Filtrete™ Filter can capture—using 3-in-1 technology from 3M—is directly related to its Microparticle Performance Rating (MPR). MPR indicates your filter’s ability to pull in and trap tiny particles between 0.3 and 1 micron in size. The higher the MPR, the more unwanted particles (think: pollen, pet dander, smoke, bacteria and viruses) your filter will capture from the air passing through it.

When you’re shopping for a filter, take note of MPR numbers. A Filtrete™ Healthy Living Filter, MPR 1500 to 2800, is our best option for capturing mold spores, pollen, pet dander, bacteria and viruses. Any filter lower than MPR 1500 will not be as effective at capturing unwanted particles in your home.

Should I choose a different filter when there’s construction or a remodeling project in my home? What about candles, a wood fireplace or tobacco smoke?

Maybe. Simply put, each of these variables—no matter how temporary or seasonal—negatively impacts your indoor air quality. To maximize your indoor air quality, we recommend using a Healthy Living or Smart Air Filter (MPR 1500 and above) to best capture particles from these lifestyle factors.

Which filter do I need if I want to capture allergens?

You’ll need a filter with an MPR of at least 800. These Allergen Defense filters are better at capturing dust mite debris, mold spores, pollen and pet dander than our Clean Living filters.

Note: Allergen Defense filters cannot capture fine particles that carry bacteria and viruses. If that’s important to you, you’ll need to shop for MPR 1500 and above.

What should I know about Smart functionality?

Our revolutionary Smart Air Filter helps you take better care of your air. How? By taking all the guesswork out of filter changes (its sensor tracks air flow and usage, not just time). Pair it with our Fitlrete™ Smart App, and convenience is delivered via real-time filter change notifications, outdoor air quality monitoring and tips to improve your air quality.
