Keep your home’s indoor air quality in tiptop shape—and your home looking great—with these dusting ideas.
Let’s face it: Dusting isn’t the most exciting household chore. But it’s one of the most important things you can do to make sure your home’s indoor air quality is in tiptop shape. Here are a few ways to make this necessary task a little more interesting, if not downright fun.
Rather than dampening microfiber dust cloths with just plain water, concoct a lovely, naturally scented dust cloth. Simply simmer a sliced-up lemon and a few sprigs of fresh rosemary in water, and use the resulting scented water to dampen clean dust cloths.
Have kids? Then you know competition is a great motivator. Assign each child a few areas of the home to dust, and give them the proper cleaning gear. Then set a timer for 10 or 15 minutes. Once the “race” is completed, you get to judge which competitor did the most thorough job. (Perhaps the winner gets to opt out of the next chore on your family’s to-do list.)
Incorporate one or two dusting tasks into your family’s daily routine by creating a basket filled with clean dust cloths and a jar that includes pieces of paper where you’ve written down every dust “zone” in your house (think bedrooms, living areas, window casings and blinds). Ask everyone to pull out one slip of paper each day and tackle whatever zone is listed. When the jar is empty, restock it. This is a great way to stay on top of the important task of dusting rather than letting it accumulate into a chore that takes an hour or more.
