  • How to Clean Your Air Purifier FAQ

Changing your air purifier filter is a key step to maintain its effectiveness, but it’s not the only thing you need to do.

Prepping your home for spring thaw? Here’s how things like pest poison and indoor and outdoor insect spray can affect your indoor air quality, and how you can protect your home while keeping bad air at bay.

    • Owning a Filtrete™ Air Purifier is exciting! It indicates you are committed to better indoor air quality. Maybe you have an air purifier to remove dust and it gives you peace of mind in specific rooms. Or maybe you don’t have an HVAC system, and it’s your best path to filtering the air you breathe in an apartment, dorm room or classroom.

Here’s some pointers on air purifier ownership, plus how to clean and maintain your air purifier and filter.

      Air purifier FAQ basics

Before we dive into air purifier cleaning tips, let’s answer three common questions we get about air purifiers:

      1. “Do air purifiers remove dust?” Filtrete™ Air Purifiers with True HEPA filtration remove 99.97% of airborne particles*, including dust, pet dander, lint, mold, mildew, bacteria and viruses. Each air purifier is a powerful way to improve your indoor air quality.

      2. “How many air purifiers do I need?” It might not be realistic to have an air purifier in every room, so choose areas of your house that get a lot of traffic or areas that may adversely affect air quality, like the kitchen or bedrooms. Remember that our air purifiers cover a specific amount of square footage, so that sizing will dictate the best option for each room.

      3. “Where to place air purifiers?” Our air purifiers are intended to be used indoors only. You should place these devices in the rooms where you spend the most time, and in areas where air can flow easily through the device to be cleaned. Keep air purifiers at least 12” away from furniture and walls so the inlet and outlet airflows won’t be blocked.

      How to clean: Air purifier

Before cleaning, turn the air purifier off and unplug it. On the outside of the air purifier, use a soft, dirt-free, dampened cloth for cleaning. The air inlet and outlet grills can be cleaned with a small dry, soft brush.

The best way to clean your air purifier filter is to change it.

How to maximize your air purifier

Have you ever cleaned your vacuum? Maintaining your air purifier draws parallels to that exact exercise. Your device is only as good as the filter inside, and your filter only works if you take care of your device. Follow these steps to get the most out of your air purifier experience:

      1. As much as possible, clean and seal the room in which your air purifier operates.

      2. Continue to dust surfaces and vacuum on a normal schedule.

      3. Close all windows and doors during operation.

      4. Change the filter regularly.

      5. If your air purifier has a pre-filter screen, clean it at least monthly.
