For maximum effectiveness, we recommend you change filters every three months. However, the life of a filter can depend on the individual conditions in your home. You may need to change your filter more often if your home has:
Unusually dirty duct work
Construction work in progress
Furniture or drywall sanding in progress
Pets
Smokers
A fan running continuously
In these cases, you may want to change the filter more frequently.
What is the difference between fiberglass filters and Filtrete filters?
Fiberglass filters were originally developed to protect your furnace and/or air conditioning system. They were not intended to significantly improve your indoor air quality. Filtrete filters were created to both protect your furnace equipment AND clean the air you breathe.
Our filters improve your indoor air quality by attracting and capturing allergy-aggravating microparticles. Your air is cleaned each time it re-circulates through the filter.
How do washable/reusable filters compare to Filtrete filters?
Surprisingly, even expensive washable/reusable filters can’t capture microparticles as well as Filtrete filters can. The real difference is the electrostatic charge found in Filtrete filters.
Why does it matter that Filtrete filters are "electrostatically charged"?
Filtrete electrostatically charged filters have both positively-charged and negatively-charged fibers. The particulates in the air passing through the filter are either positively or negatively charged too—and these charged particles stick to the filter. The charge helps pull more particles from the air than a filter without a charge.
Filtrete filtering material will not support the growth of bacteria, mold, mildew or fungi in normal use. No unnecessary chemicals have been added to the filters.
Do I have to worry about restricted airflow with Filtrete filters?
If you use a Filtrete filter for longer than three months, it may begin to restrict airflow or cause your heating/cooling system to malfunction. It also could restrict airflow in some higher-efficiency air conditioning systems. When in doubt, change the filter more frequently.
Will a Filtrete filter eliminate the need for dusting?
Filtrete filters may reduce the need for dusting, but won't eliminate it. Atmospheric dust consists of a wide variety of particulates ranging in size from 0.001 micron to a relatively large 100 microns. Because of the weight of the large particles, they will settle on your furniture long before they could reach your filter.
How do Filtrete filters compare with electronic air cleaners?
The efficiency of Filtrete filters approaches that of the top-of-the-line electronic air cleaners.
Some tests indicate that in the large particle size range (1.0-10 microns), Filtrete filters are more effective. Price is a factor, too. Top electronic units cost $500 - $800 and require monthly maintenance. Filtrete filters cost a fraction of this price, and generally only need attention every three months.
How often should I change my Filtrete water filter?
Filtrete Under-Sink Water Filters effectively filter 2,000 gallons of water before they need to be changed. A 4-person household typically uses 2,000 gallons of kitchen tap water, and therefore needs a filter change, every 6 months.
What will a Filtrete under-sink filter remove from my water?
The Filtrete™ Standard Water Filtration System reduces sediment, chlorine taste and odor from your tap water. The Filtrete™ Professional Water Filtration System does all that, while also reducing parasitic cysts.
My family is happy drinking bottled water. Why should we make the switch to a Filtrete water filter?
Two reasons: cost and the environment. Bottled water can cost 500 to 4,000 times more than filtered tap water. And 85% of used bottles end up in landfills.* Learn more about the environmental impact of bottled water.
What are the different levels of water filtration?
Basic water filtration reduces sand, sediment, rust and soil from 50 microns to 5 microns
Standard water filtration includes basic water filtration and reduces chlorine taste and odor
Advanced water filtration includes basic water filtration and standard water filtration and reduces health effect microbial cysts contaminants
Maximum water filtration includes basic water filtration, standard water filtration and advanced water filtration and reduces lead and other health effect contaminants (depending upon the system)
